化工行业属于高污染产业，化工在生产过程中需要消耗大量的水，当生产结束后应用在生产中的水就成为了含有大量硫、酚氰等污染物的污水，需要排放出去。由于化工生产产品多种多样，因而排放的污水也含有大量各种各样的污染物，例如多环芳香胺类化合物、杂环化合物等，这些污染物会导致污水性质发生变化，这就对化工污水处理技术、设备提出了更高的要求，进而加大了化工污水处理的难度。
